Newton Beats St. A, Area Girls Roundup

NEWTON -- Newton High School played host to Effingham St. Anthony and handed the Bulldogs a 46-30 loss in girls basketball action Thursday evening.

The Eagles edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead and led 22-11 at halftime. The Eagles had a 17-13 third period.

Abby Frohning, a 5-foot-9 senior, led the way for the Eagles with 23 points. She scored nine by halftime then had a nine point third quarter. Frohning also led in rebounds with 12 and had four assists. Allison Harris led in assists with six.

The Eagles improve to 6-5 on the season.

St. Anthony was led by Olivia Clausius with eight and Meg Richards with seven. Clausius pulled down eight rebounds and had two steals. Richards also had two steals. Keri McGuire and Shea Kinkelaar had three assists each.

Newton also claimed the junior vasrity contest 27-18.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed a National Trail Conference win over Neoga, 61-49 in action Thursday evening.

BSE held a 33-26 halftime lead then had a 17-11 third period run.

Olivia Campbell, a 5-foot-6 freshman, led the way for the winners with 23 points. Dana Shelton chipped in with 11 and Claire Wilhour and Natalie Oberlink added 10 each.

Neoga was led by Blair Banning with 12. The Indians drop to 3-1 in the conference, 8-4 overall.

At Altamont

Altamont played host to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in National Trail Conference play and captured a 60-32 victory Thursday.

The Indians edged out to an 11-8 opening quarter lead then had a 22-8 second period and that was the game. In that run, Brooke Runge nailed a three point and two free throws while Tinley Mette scored five, Joanna Schultz four and Shelbi Stone four.

Runge finished with 10 points for the Indians while Stone also had 10 points. Eight other players scored in the contest.

CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson and Lauren Wojcik with 11 points each.

Altamont also claimed the junior varsity contest 44-22.

At Bluford

Webber Township Bluford put the game away in the opening quarter with a 25-0 run against South Central Thursday evening.

Webber Township went on for a 69-24 victory. Four players hit double digits. Moser tallied 12 while Hutchinson added 11, Jones 10 and Cameron 10.

South Central was led by Sydnee Garrett with 15. She hit five field goals and five free throws.

The Cougars drop to 1-8 on the season. They return to action Monday at Mulberry Grove.
