Cumberland Advances To SEB Holiday Tourney Title Game

ST. ELMO -- Cumberland High School advanced to the championship game of the St. Elmo/Brownstown Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory Thursday evening.

The Pirates edged out to a 16-11 opening quarter lead and led 30-28 at halftime. Tyson Magee tallied eight of his team's points in the opening quarter then scored seven more in the second period. Zach Wolke nailed two three-pointers in the opening quarter and scored five in the second period.

Magee continued his hot scoring with seven more in the third period as the Pirates took a 47-41 lead going into the final period.

Cumberland then nailed its free throws in the final period, connecting on 11 of 15 for the final 67-63 win.

In consolation bracket play, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City pounded Sandoval 83-34. CHBC held a 46-20 halftime lead and never looked back.

Three players hit double figures for the Bobcats. Keegan Martin, a 6-foot junior, finished with 19 points. He hit six field goals including three trifectas and was four of seven at the line. Dylan Webster scored 17 on eight field goals and a free throw. Nick Miller tallied 15.

Tonight's games feature Ramsey against Patoka at 6:15 in consolation bracket action and St. Elmo/Brownstown taking on Vandalia at 7:45 in winner bracket play.

Cumberland advanced to the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CHBC will play for the consolation championship at 4:30. The third place game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
