SIGEL -- Stewardson-Strasburg Junior High School captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

Altamont stepped out to an 11-4 opening quarter lead but Stew-Stras came back to pull within 17-15 at halftime. The Stars then had a 10-3 third quarter and outscored Altamont 15-7 in the final period.

Davis tallied 17, J. Wittenberg 13 and A. Wittenberg 10 for the winners.  Altamont was led by Kollman with 10.

The third place contest went to Dieterich over South Central 45-43. St. Elmo/Brownstown won the consolation championship over North Clay (Louisville), 34-32.

At Charleston

Effingham St. Anthony split victories at Charleston Thursday evening.

The Bullpups won the seventh-grade contest 26-25. The two teams were tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter. Charleston moved ahead 12-9 at halftime and led 20-14 going into the final quarter.

St. Anthony then put together a 12-5 run to pull out the one point win. Griffin Sehy tallied 11 for the Bullpups, knocking in a three-pointer. Jon Willenborg had six and Michael Martelli five with a three-pointer in the final period.

St. Anthony improves to 9-3 on the season.

In eighth-grade action, Charleston claimed a 48-36 victory. Charleston led 19-14 at halftime then led by eight going into the final quarter and had a 17-0 run.

J. Blanchette scored 13 for the Bullpups. St. Anthony drops to 6-4.

 At Effingham

Effingham fell to Mattoon in both games Thursday evening.

Mattoon claimed the seventh-grade contest 30-25. Mattoon took a 19-7 first half lead and held off EJHS.

The Mustangs were led in scoring by Donaldson with six and Westendorf with six.

In the eighth-grade game, Mattoon claimed a 34-26 victory. Mattoon led 17-12 at halftime and 25-18 going into the final quarter.

Pals scored 13 to lead Effingham.

At Newton

Altamont Lutheran handed Newton St. Thomas two losses Thursday evening.

Lutheran captured a 30-24 win in seventh-grade play. ALIS held an 8-4 opening quarter lead but didn't score in the second period and trailed St. Thomas 15-8. St. Thomas still held the lead going into the final quarter, 21-15. But ALIS mounted a big comeback and outscored St. Thomas 12-3 to pull out the win.

In that final quarter, Mason Robinson connected in four of four at the line while Logan Cornett nailed two baskets and Carter Siebert scored a basket and Nathan Sehpard a free throw.

Robinson finished with 10 points while Cornett added nine. St. Thomas was led by D. Gier with six.

In the eighth-grade game, ALIS captured a 49-32 win. The two teams played to a 12-12 opening quarter.

ALIS came back with an 11-5 second period and outscored St. Thomas 14-7 in the third quarter.

Noah Klimpel scored 17 for the winners while Owen Verdeyen chipped in with 16.

St. Thomas was led by Mason Schafer with 14.

At Olney

Jasper County dropped two games to host Olney Thursday evening.

Olney was a 37-12 winner in seventh-grade play. Olney held Jasper County scoreless in the opening half to take a 12-0 lead.

Reynolds tallied six for Jasper County which drops to 3-10 on the season.

In eighth-grade play, Olney claimed a 53-22 win. Olney led 24-15 at halftime then had a 17-4 third period.

Koebele led Jasper County with eight points as the team dropped to 6-7.
