EJHS, St. Anthony, T-town Headed To State

Effingham's eighth-grade team will be heading to the Class 8-4A State Tournament Saturday.

 

Effingham, Effingham St. Anthony and Teutopolis are all headed to junior high school state basketball tournaments after winning sectionals Thursday evening.

Class 4A Effingham Sectional

The Mustangs got to win a sectional before the home crowd.

Effingham edged out to a 6-5 lead over Champaign Jefferson in the opening quarter. The Mustangs held a 10-7 halftime lead.

Effingham then went 6-3 in the third quarter and had an 11-8 final period. Schaefer tallied 11 points to lead Effingham.

This is a back-to-back trip for the Mustangs as this squad headed to state last year as seventh-graders. It's also the first time in EJHS history that both the seventh and eighth grade teams have qualified for the state tournament in the same year.

The Mustangs improve to 15-7 on the season and will be competing in the 4A State Tournament at Normal Parkside Junior High School Saturday. The first round opponent for Effingham will be Shorewood Troy (18-5) at 10 a.m. If the Mustangs win, they will play again at 5 p.m. against either Normal Parkside (24-0) or Chatham Glenwood (19-4). The finals are scheduled for Thursday, December 14.

Class 8-2A St. Anthony Sectional

Effingham St. Anthony also got to win in front of the home crowd.

The Bullpups edged Paris Crestwood, 27-25. St. Anthony held a 15-12 halftime lead. Paris Crestwood came back in the third quarter to tie the score at 17-17. St. Anthony then had a 10-8 final period.

Guy tallied 10 for the winners while Hakman added nine.

St. Anthony improves to 21-2 on the season and will head to the Class 2A State Tournament Saturday. The Bullpups will face Lewistown Central (23-2) at 11:30 a.m. If they win, they advance to the 5 p.m. contest.

Class 8-3A Marshall Sectional

Teutopolis edged Tuscola East Prairie 32-29 to win the Marshall Sectional championship Wednesday.

The Wooden Shoes took a 7-4 opening quarter lead and led by that same three-point margin at halftime. T-town came back with a 12-6 run to lead 25-16 going into the final period. Tuscola East Prairie mounted a comeback with a 13-7 run only to fall short.

Grace Tegeler led the Shoes with 11 points while Macy Probst added nine.

T-town is now 21-2 on the season and advances to the 3A State Tournament Saturday, taking on Watseka Glenn Raymond (21-2) at 1 p.m. If the Shoes win, they will play again at 6:30 p.m. against either Farmington Central (23-3) or Germantown Hills (21-2). The finals are scheduled for Thursday, December 14.
