EHS Nabs Bob Kerans Girls Tourney Title

NEWTON -- Coach Jeff Schafer's Effingham High School girls basketball squad claimed the championship of the Bob Kerans Basketball Tournament Saturday.
The Hearts finished first with a 4-0 record followed by Altamont 3-1, Flora 2-2, Newton 1-3 and Vandalia 0-4.
In Wednesday action, Altamont picked up two victories, beating Vandalia 46-37 and Flora 39-36.
In the Vandalia contest, Altamont led 26-14 at halftime then had to hold off Vandalia in the second half.
Mayhaus tallied 15 for the Indians.
In the win over Flora, Altamont trailed 14-6 after the opening quarter but tied by halftime at 18-18. The two teams played to a 31-31 tie in the third period. Altamont then had an 8-5 final quarter to pull out the victory.
Schultz scored eight to lead the winners.
In the other game, Effingham downed Newton 62-31. The Hearts fired out to a 19-5 opening quarter lead and it was no contest from that point on.
Fearday tallied 15 while Weis chipped in with 10 for the Hearts.
Newton was led by Frohning with eight points.
In Friday's games, Flora opened with a 54-49 win over Vandalia.
Altamont then downed Newton 52-42.
The Indians led 29-17 at halftime. Newton came back with a 25-23 second half but couldn't make up that first half.
Runge tallied 16 and Guse 10 for the Indians. Newton was led by Frohning with 10.
In the third game of the day and final game of the tourney, Effingham handed Vandalia a 55-22 loss. The Hearts again jumped out to a big opening quarter lead, 14-4 and never looked back.
Feraday scored 14 while Weis chipped in with nine.
"The girls played a good tournament this week," said Coach Schafer. "This was a total team effort. Everyone played well and together. We were a little sluggish at the start but we finally got going and played well."
Named to the All-Tournament Team were Carsyn Fearday (Effingham), Sydney Cammon (Flora), Abby Frohning (Newton), Tinley Mette (Altamont), Shelby Myers (Effingham) and Miranda Fox (Effingham).
