Wooden Shoes Claim Capital Classic Title

RED HILL -- Teutopolis High School captured the championship of the Capital Boys Basketball Classic Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes went overtime before downing Mount Carmel to win the title, 72-70.

T-town pushed into an early 16-8 lead behind Lee Hardiek's eight points as he knocked in a regular basket and two three-pointers. But Mount Carmel rallied in the second period and pulled within 34-28 at halftime with a 20-18 run.

T-town still held a slight lead after three quarters 48-45. But the Golden Aces again had a run and outscored the Shoes 17-14 and the score was tied at 62-62 sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, T-town connected on its free throws and Hardiek again knocked in a three-pointer. The Shoes hit five free throws and Kremer put in a basket along with his two free throws as the Shoes pulled out a 72-70 victory.

Hardiek tallied 27 points for the winners, hitting five three-pointers. Also in double figures were Kremer with 12 and Smith with 11.Smith pulled down six rebounds and had five assists. Kreke also had five assists.

In Friday games, Teutopolis pounded Marshall 60-33 and downed Fairfield 58-43.

T-town ripped off to a 19-4 opening quarter lead over Marshall and never looked back in this one. Smith led the way with 18 points while Kremer had 14 and Funneman added 11.

In the win over Fairfield, the Shoes were tied at 22-22 at halftime then had a 17-7 third period. L. Hardiek led the way with 19 points while Smith added 17.

In the first game for the Shoes on Saturday, T-town defeated Lawrenceville easily 78-37. The Shoes led 46-19 at halftime and had a 22-11 third period.

L. Hardiek tallied 25 and Funneman 15 for the Shoes.
