Pirates, Eagles Win At Cumberland Boys Tourney

TOLEDO -- The Cumberland Boys Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament got underway Monday evening with four games on tap at the high school and junior high school.
In action at the high school, Newton defeated Edwards County (Albion), 59-45. The Eagles edged out to a 13-11 opening quarter lead and held only a one point lead at halftime.
Newton then had a 12-9 third quarter to lead 38-36 going into the final period. From that point, the Eagles connected on their free throws as Zak Finn hit four of five, Collin Harris nailed two and two baskets for six points and Nicholas Cohorst banged home four baskets, including a three-pointer, for nine and the Eagles had the win.
Cohorst finished with 21 points while Ben Carr added 10.
In the second game at the high school, Cumberland handed Altamont a 71-57 loss. The Pirates zipped out to a 27-12 opening quarter lead and established momentum.
Cumberland led 42-24 at halftime. Altamont had a 33-29 second half but couldn't make up that first quarter.
Cumberland was led by Zach Wolke with 25 points and Tyson Magee with 17.
Altamont was led by Mitchell Stevenson with 12, Alek Biggs with 12 and Aiden Jahraus with 11.
In action at the junior high school, Casey-Westfield defeated Oblong 72-51 in the opening game.
In the second contest, Charleston claimed a 66-52 win over Dieterich.
The Movin' Maroons took a 19-11 opening quarter lead but Charleston came roaring back with a 20-4 second period and that was the game.
Ryan Radloff led Dieterich with 27 points while Tyler Higgs contributed 15.
