St. A Wins, T-town Falls in OT; Area Girls H.S. Roundup

MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham St. Anthony High School traveled to Mount Vernon for girls basketball competition Thursday evening and fell to the host squad 41-33.

The two squads played to an 11-11 opening quarter tie. Mount Vernon then edged ahead 19-16 at halftime. The second half belonged to the Rams as they had a 14-8 third period run. Scarbrough tallied six in the quarter for the winners. The Rams hit 12 of 22 free throws while the Bulldogs were seven of 14 from the line.

Leading St. Anthony were Bushur with 12 points and Richards with 10. Mount Vernon was led by Lockhart with 13.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis went overtime but couldn't pull out a victory over visiting Pana. The Wooden Shoes went down to a 52-48 defeat.

T-town held a 13-12 opening quarter lead but the score was tied at 27-27 at halftime. Pana then went on a tear outscoring the Shoes 16-6 in the third quarter. But here came T-town with a 12-2 fourth quarter run to tie the score at 35-35. In the overtime session, Pana hit a basket and five free throws to pull out the victory.

Schoonover and Alde tallied 10 points each for the winners. Pana connected on 57.7 percent from the field and hit 19 of 34 free throws for 55.9 percent. The Panthers pulled down 20 rebounds, had seven steals and 17 turnovers.

T-town was led by Hartke with 25. The Shoes hit 47.2 percent from the field and were 14 of 24 at the line for 58.3 percent. They had 19 rebounds, 13 steals and 22 turnovers.

At Brownstown

Dieterich headed to Brownstown and claimed a 68-35 victory over the host squad.

Dieterich leaped out to a 21-6 opening quarter lead and led 39-14 at halftime. Candace Niemerg and Mallorie Vahling were the one-two scoring punch for the Maroons with 19 points each. Also in double figures were Courtney Flach with 13. Niemerg had a double-double scoring 19 points and pulling down 19 rebounds.

Brownstown was led by Molly Hill with 12 and Danie Austin with 10.

Dieterich improves to 3-0 in the National Trail Conference and 7-1 overall.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City keeps moving right along. CHBC handed Okaw Valley a 55-22 loss to improve to 4-1 overall.

Micah Jones scoring a whopping 27 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Autumn Riley tallied nine points.

Newton blasted Oblong 60-20 in varsity girls action Thursday evening.

Newton held Oblong scoreless while taking a 22-0 lead in the opening quarter. Morgan Swingler and Tara Wirth tallied 12 points each for the winners. Swingler led in rebounds with six. Megan Jansen had five steals.

Newton improves to 2-0 in the Little Illini Conference and 6-2 overall.

North Clay (Louisville) captured a 54-37 win over Woodlawn. Wyatt and Stanfield tallied six points each in the opening quarter run that produced a 20-2 lead. Stanfield scored eight more before halftime as the Cardinals led 32-10.

Stanfield finished with 22 points while Walker and Wyatt scored 10 each.
