Effingham's seventh-grade boys basketball team overcame a gritty Dieterich team to capture a 39-37 victory and improve to 5-2 on the season Monday evening.

Effingham enjoyed a three point lead at halftime and built that lead up to five in the third quarter before Dieterich finished the period with an 8-0 run to lead by three going into the final quarter. Effingham then outscored Dieterich 10-5 to escape with a two-point victory.

Effingham was led by Mason Hull with 17 and Dieterich was led by C. Campton with 15.

In eighth-grade action, Effingham bounced Dieterich 49-5. Donaldson tallied 10 points and had two rebounds. Beals led in steals with four and Shan had three rebounds.

Effingham stepped out to a 27-1 opening quarter lead and held Dieterich scoreless in the second period to lead 39-1 at halftime.

At Goff Gym

Effingham St. Anthony picked up a seventh-grade victory over Jasper County, 36-19. The Bullpups improve to 7-0.

Nuxoll tallied 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Deters scored 11 while  Utz and Brandt had seven boards each. Jasper County was led by Chapman, Cohorst and Wagy with four points each.

Jasper County claimed the eighth-grade game 40-17. Jasper County held a 25-6 halftime lead. Joe Stone tallied eight for the winners as 10 players scored. Jansen led St. Anthony with five.

At St. Elmo

Stewardson-Strasburg and St. Elmo split victories. Stew-Stras was a 42-32 winner in seventh-grade play. Theis tallied 18 and Kramer 13 for the winners who improve to 3-2 in the National Trail Conference, 7-3 overall. St. Elmo was led by White with 14 and Brown with 10.

In the eighth-grade contest, St. Elmo was a 34-19 winner. Stew-Stras drops to 4-2 in the conference, 5-6 overall. Austin led St. Elmo with 10 points. Overbeck led Stew-Stras with nine.

At  Altamont

Altamont picked up two victories over Windsor. Altamont was a 40-10 winner in seventh-grade action. Altamont took a 24-2 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Armstrong tallied 15 and Cornett 10 for the winners. Nic Hutchinson led Windsor with nine.

In eighth-grade competition, Altamont took a 51-36 win. Altamont took a 28-16 halftime lead and outscored Windsor 23-20 in the second half. Three players hit double figures including Stevenson with 15, Pemberton with 14 and Brown with 10. Windsor was led by Dalton Armes with 16.

North Clay (Louisville) handed South Central a 62-48 loss. Scoring leaders for North Clay were Bryce Walker 14, Brandon Repking 11 and Cody Smith 10.

North Clay improves to 4-3 on the season.
