SANDOVAL -- Dieterich High School came calling at Sandoval and handed the host squad a 60-46 loss in girls basketball action Monday evening.

The two squads were tied at 12-12 after one period and the Blackhawks held a 24-22 lead at halftime. However, Dieterich came roaring out in the third quarter, blazing away with a 22-9 run.

Four players hit double figures for the Maroons. Candace Niemerg led the way with 25 points, 22 rebounds, five assists and four steals followed by Sydney Higgs with 11 points and four steals, Courtney Flach with 10 points and Mallorie Vahling with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sandoval was led by Kylie Parson with 15 and Madison Crawford with 10.

Dieterich improves its record to 2-0 on the season.

At Newton

Newton defeated visiting Charleston 57-36 to improve to 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles broke a 14-14 first quarter tie with a 15-5 second period run. The Eagles continued the pressure with a 28-17 second half. Morgan Swingler tallied 21 points and had five rebounds. Megan Jansen added 13 points. Amy Bierman and Sarah Stewart led in rebounding with seven each.

"The team responded really well in their second game of the year," said Newton Coach Brad Harris. "Everything looked much smoother than the first night. The girls put together a strong effort on both ends of the floor."

Red Hill led 16-12 at halftime then had a slight 12-10 second period lead. Taylor Paulin led the winners with 10 points. North  Clay was led by Bible with seven.

Neoga dropped a loss to Marshall 63-32. Neoga trailed by a point after the opening quarter, but Marshall took off with a 16-4 second period run and never looked back.

Kleim tallied 20, Grooms 13 and Bishop 12 for the winners who improve to 3-0. Neoga was led by J. Deters with 10 points.

Shelbyville edged Brownstown 44-42. Brownstown took a 14-10 opening quarter lead and led 27-16 at halftime.

Shelbyville came roaring back to outscore Brownstown 12-7 in the third quarter to pull within 34-28 going into the final period then had a 16-8 run to pull out the victory. The Rams were led by Floyd and Burton with 13 points each. The squad hit six three-pointers in the game.

Brownstown was led by M. Hill and Pruett with 12 each.
