Bulldogs Down Newton; Area Girls Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony High School handed Newton a 41-30 loss in girls basketball competition Thursday evening.

Newton edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead on the Bulldogs but St. Anthony came back with a 9-4 run to lead 18-14 at halftime. The Bulldogs continued to have the momentum with a 10-8 lead in the third period and a 13-8 final quarter run as Richards tallied six.

Richards finished with 13 to lead the Bulldogs while Walsh tallied 10. Newton was led by Swingler with 15.

In the junior varsity contest, Newton was a 42-23 winner.

At Charleston

Charleston took a 13-8 first half lead on Altamont but the Indians fought back within 21-18 at halftime.  Charleston then had a 12-5 third period run and went on for a 39-31 victory.

Morgan Sherwood led the Trojans by scoring 17 of her total 21 points in the first half. Altamont was led by Wendling with nine points. Charleston is now 2-0 on the season.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City fell to Moweaqua Central A&M 57-47. The score was knotted at 13-13 after the opening quarter. Central A&M then took a 31-20 halftime lead.

But CHBC came back with a 15-10 third quarter run to pull within 41-35 going into the final period. Central A&M then had a 16-12 final period run.

CHBC was led by Micah Jones with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Autumn Riley tallied eight. CHBC drops to 1-1 on the season.

In the junior varsity contest, Central A&M was a 54-29 winner.

Teutopolis opened competition in the Salem Thanksgiving Tournament with a 51-31 victory over Highland Thursday evening.

T-town led 15-12 after one quarter then had a 12-8 second period run to lead 27-20 at halftime.  T-town then took off in the second half to lead 42-27 going into the final quarter.

Madeline Hartke tallied 14 for the winners while Cierra Thompson scored 11.

North Clay (Louisville) was a 57-32 winner over South Central.

The Cardinals held a 17-12 first quarter lead then went into high gear to lead 33-13 at halftime, holding the Cougars to only one free throw in the second quarter.

Smith tallied 16 to lead nine players in the scoring column for North Clay.

Shelbyville edged Brownstown 44-42. Brownstown held a 17-16 first half lead. Shelbyville then had a 12-7 third period run and outscored the Bombers 16-8 in the final period.
