Dieterich Edges St. Anthony, Hearts Fall; Area Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Dieterich and the Movin' Maroons edged the Bulldogs 38-36 in girls high school basketball Tuesday evening.

Dieterich jumped out to a 14-7 opening quarter lead as Niemerg tallied five points. Dieterich still led 20-14 at halftime.

But here came the Bulldogs. In the third period, five players scored as St. Anthony pulled within 28-24 and the Bulldogs had a 12-10 edge in the final period but Dieterich held on. Niemerg and Vahling finished with 13 points each for the Maroons. St. Anthony was led by Richards and Walsh with eight each.

In the junior varsity contest, St. Anthony was a 33-17 winner.

At Effingham

Pana High School came calling and downed the Hearts 63-36 in varsity action Tuesday evening.

Pana took a 10-6 opening quarter lead and led 29-18 at halftime. The Panthers then came out in the third period and put the contest away with a 19-7 run. Allie Schoonover led four players in double figures with 17. Hannah Funneman tallied 12, Sydney Lett 11 and Alde 10. Schoonover pulled down seven rebounds.

Effingham was led by Josie Zerrusen and Kelli Utz with seven points each. Zerrusen pulled down seven rebounds and Utz six.

The Hearts will be back in action Tuesday at Newton.

Teutopolis High School edged host Sullivan 54-50. Sullivan held a 15-9 opening quarter lead on the Wooden Shoes.

T-town came back to tie the score at 30-30 at halftime. The Shoes then edged out to a 44-41 lead with a 19-11 third period run and held on for the victory. Repking led the Shoes with 19 points while M. Hartke and Schumacher tallied nine each.

Sullivan was led by Stewart with 15, Neuhauser with 11 and Morrison with 10.

Charleston picked up a 62-37 win over Cumberland. The Trojans led 26-17 at halftime and then had a 23-10 third period run.

Morgan Sherwood led the Trojans with 19 points and Erin Story tallied 15. Cumberland was led by Holsapple with 17 and Seibert with 10.

Charleston won the junior varsity game 45-9.
