Olney Beats Charleston In OT; Area Teams Open Sectional Play Tonight

MATTOON -- Olney High School downed Charleston 53-44 in overtime in the Class 3A Boys Basketball Regional Monday evening.

The Tigers moved out to a 10-6 opening quarter lead and led 20-18 at halftime. Olney then had 17-12 third quarter run to lead 37-30 going into the final period.

Charleston mounted a comeback with a 13-6 run to knot the score, sending the game into overtime.

But Olney was in charge in the overtime period with a 10-1 run.

Miller tallied 20 for the winners while Hatten scored 13. Charleston was led by Taylor-Lutz with 15 and Boyer with 10.

Olney advances to face Effingham tonight at 7. The third contest will take place Wednesday with Mount Zion against Mattoon at 7. The winners of tonight and Wednesday night's games will play for the regional championship at 7 p.m. Friday and advance to the Effingham Sectional Tuesday, March 7.

Coach Ron Reed's team comes into the contest with a 24-4 record.

 

 Altamont won its own regional championship last week and will take on St. Anthony tonight in the Nokomis Sectional.

Class 1A Nokomis Sectional

Effingham St. Anthony and Altamont will square off tonight in the opening game of the Nokomis Sectional.

The two teams have met twice this season in National Trail Conference play.  St. Anthony won the regular season conference contest 74-69 and took the NTC tourney title with a 62-61 win over the Indians.

The second contest in the regional is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday and will have Dieterich taking on top-seeded Patoka at 7.

The Movin' Maroons come into the meeting with a 16-14 record.

The winners of tonight and Wednesday's games meet at 7 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship and a trip to the Carbondale (SIU) Super-Sectional Tuesday, March 7  at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Sectional.

 

Class 2A West Frankfort Sectional

Teutopolis won't be in action until Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Mount Carmel in the West Frankfort Sectional.

Tonight's game features Eldorado taking on Robinson at 7.

The Wooden Shoes come into Wednesday's meeting with a 27-3 record.

The winners from tonight and Wednesday advance to the sectional championship game Friday at 7 p.m. The sectional winner advances to the Carbondale (SIU) Super-Sectional Tuesday March 7 at 7:30 p.m. against the Nashville Sectional winner.
