St. Anthony Girls Season Comes To Close, Regional Scores

The St. Anthony Bulldogs saw their season come to an end Monday night in the semifinals of the Class 1A Arcola Girls Basketball Sectional. St. Anthony fell to Tri-County 51-43 in a game heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The game was even-steven after the first quarter, 14-14, and the Bulldogs only trailed 24-22 at halftime. Tri-County moved ahead 36-31 after three quarters and the Titans outscored St. Anthony 15-12 in the final quarter to post the eight-point win.

St. Anthony made just 16 of 48 shots, 33%, including 2 of 8 threes. Tri-County made 41% of its shots, 17 of 42, including 1 of 3 threes. Tri-County made 16 of 21 foul shots, though, while the Bulldogs were 9 of 13 from the line. St. Anthony had 17 turnovers to 15 for Tri-County, and St. Anthony outboarded Tri-County 32-28.

Olivia Clausius led St. Anthony with 13 points. Also for St. Anthony: Abby Weis 9, Meg Richards 8, Abbie Schmidt 7, and Clare McHugh, Sydney Gibson and Keri McGuire 2 each. Schmit was fouled hard in the final quarter  and left the game, unable to shoot her free throws.

Shayne Smith scored 21 points to pace Tri-County, now 26-4 on the season.

"I'm very proud of these girls," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We set a school record for victories and finished perfect in the National Trail Conference."

St. Anthony closes its season with a 22-9 record and its fourth consecutive regional championship. The Bulldogs say goodbye to senior Abbie Schmidt.

In the other contest, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran edged Central A&M 47-46.

Tri-County will meet Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Thursday for the regional championship at 7 p.m.
