The Effingham Hearts captured the Apollo Conference basketball championship for the fifth consecutive season with an exciting 93-80 double overtime win Friday night at Mt. Zion. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

A win for the Hearts didn't look likely the way the game began. Mt. Zion hit 10 of 16 shots in the first quarter to lead 22-13. Effingham was down by 11 on two occasions before finally starting to right the ship in the second quarter. The Hearts eventually outscored the Braves 23-17 in the period to pull within 39-36 at halftime.

Effingham began the second overtime with four players carrying four personal fouls and Brent Beals playing a day after missing a day of school due to illness. The Hearts also played the game without starter Mason Hull who was home ill.
