Hearts pound Mattoon, WSS, Cumberland Win

MATTOON -- Effingham High School handled Mattoon in Apollo Conference play Friday evening to the tune of 83-49 in boys basketball action.
The Hearts put the game in the win column in the opening quarter with a 23-6 run. Five players scored in the quarter for the Hearts and hit four three-pointers. Grant Wolfe, Mason Hull and Jacob Donaldson tallied five each while Landon Wolfe and Brent Beals scored four each. L. Wolfe, Hull, G. Wolfe and Donaldson knocked in a three-pointer each.
The Hearts held a 44-19 halftime lead and led 74-36 after three quarters.
Six players scored in double digits for the Hearts. G. Wolfe tallied 19 while Donaldson had 15, L. Wolfe 12, Trevor Kreke 10, Hull 10 and Brent Beals 10.

At Windsor
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg had a fast start and went on to down Mulberry Grove 68-47 in non-conference action Friday evening.
The Hatchets stepped out to a 24-11 opening quarter lead then had a 21-11 third quarter.
Three players led the way in scoring for the Hatchets. Chase Thies and Isaac Kramer scored 16 points each while Christian Kessler tallied 14.
Windsor/Stew-Stras is now 13-10 on the season while Mulberry Grove fell to 10-14.
Windsor/Stew-Stras won the junior varsity game 54-27.

At Toledo
Cumberland edged Palestine/Hutsonville in Friday competition, 54-50 in overtime.
It was the Zach Wolfe show for the Pirates in the opening quarter as he knocked in four three-pointers and tallied all 14 of his team's points as they edged ahead 14-13.
But Palestine/Hutsonville came roaring back with a 16-7 second period to lead 29-21 at halftime. P-H held a 38-33 lead going into the final quarter when Cumberland came back with an 11-6 run to knot the score at 44-44 and send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, Z. Wolke nailed five of six free throws while Mike Wolke put in a basket and a free throw and Connor Butler tallied two free throws and the Pirates pulled out the win.
Z. Wolke finished with 33 points to lead the Pirates. He had eight three-pointers in the game.

Dieterich played host to North Clay (Louisville) in National Trail Conference play and picked up a 70-48 victory.
The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 19-12 opening quarter lead and led by the same margin at halftime, 31-24. Dieterich then had a 39-24 second half run.
Four players hit double figures for the winners. Bohnhoff led the way with with 21 points while Callaway Campton tallied 19, Devin Flach 12 and Tyler Higgs 12.
North Clay was led by Brandon Repking with 17 and Bryce Holkenbrink with 16.

Marshall led a 13-11 opening quarter lead then broke the game open with 21-9 second period and a 17-4 third quarter.
The Eagles were led by Collin Harris, a 6-foot-1 junior, with 18 points and Jack Chapman with 10.
