Hearts Beat Salem, Area Girls Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Salem in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Thursday evening and came away with a 54-33 victory.
The Hearts trailed Salem 14-12 after the opening quarter but came back strong with a 12-4 second period to lead 24-18 at halftime.
EHS then continued strong offensively with a 20-8 third quarter and put the game away.
Carsyn Fearday, making her first appearance in several weeks after suffering an injury, tallied 20 points while Aly Armstrong added 10.
"We played very well after the first quarter," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We did a good job of getting everyone involved. We had five different people score in both the second and third quarters and really locked down defensively. Carsyn had a great game back after missing four games and Miranda Fox did a great job both running the point and defensively. Aly played a really solid game and Bria Barr and Skyler Schafer really contributed on both ends."
The Hearts are 7-2 in the conference, 22-4 overall. Mattoon won the conference championship Thursday evening by beating Taylorville, 59-40.

Neoga came calling and picked up a 62-30 National Trail Conference win over Dieterich Thursday evening.
The Indians held a 26-11 halftime lead then had a 20-7 third period. Blair Banning tallied 21 and Jaycie Roy 12 for the winners.
Dieterich was led by Anna Shadle with 14 points and eight rebounds. She also had four steals. Gracie Britton led in assists with three.

Newton broke an 11-11 opening quarter tie and went on for a 44-28 win over Casey-Westfield Thursday to finish out Little Illini Conference play with a 7-1 record and the regular season championship.
"I am proud of the girls' effort amd dedication all season long," said Newton Coach Harris. "To win 20 regular season games and win the regular season conference championship is quite an accomplishment. I know the girls are not finished yet and are looking to have a strong post season run."
Ariel Richards tallied 14 points while Grace Hartrich contributed 12 for the Eagles who are 20-7 overall. Hartrich pulled down eight rebounds while Kaitlyn Cohorst added five. Olivia Shipman and Mariah Earnest had two assists each. Shipman, Cohorst and Abby Frohning had four steals each.

WSS edged out to an 11-10 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 31-20 at halftime.
Nikki Trusell led the winners with 20 points while Megan Schlechte and Becca Schlechte scored 14 points each.
North Clay was led by Madi Craig with 14 and Taylor Jones with 11.

The Pirates held an 11-8 opening quarter lead and led 17-14 at halftime. Palestine/Hutsonville came back with a 10-7 third period to tie the score at 24-24 going into the final quarter then had a 9-7 run to pull out the victory.
Cumberland was led by Skylar Brumleve with 13 points. Brumleve knocked in three trifectas.
