TEUTOPOLIS -- The fourth quarter was all Teutopolis as the Wooden Shoes handed Effingham a 61-42 loss in girls basketball action Friday evening at J.H. Griffin Gymnasium.

Up to that point, the two teams had battled back and forth, but the Wooden Shoes went on a scoring spree, knocking down four three-pointers and pulled away.

"We settled in and took good shots," said T-town Coach Laurie Thompson. "The fourth was was definitely big. We moved the ball well and that's why Shelby (Thompson) got the three point shots. I do think it was huge moving the ball."

Effingham took the early lead but T-town came back with a basket by Jolene Bueker and two free throws by Sadie Bueker. Then it was back and forth before the Hearts stepped out to a four point lead on a three-pointer by Skyler Schafer. But here came T-town with a three-pointer by Thompson and a bucket by J. Bueker and the Shoes led 11-10 at the end of the opening period.

It was back to the Hearts and the score bounced back and forth nine times before the Shoes' Sadie Bueker put in a basket and T-town held a 25-23 halftime lead.

T-town pushed the lead to 30-23 at the start of the third quarter but the Hearts battled back and regained the lead with a little over five minutes remaining in the period. Then the lead went back and forth again and the Hearts' Natalie Carie hit a basket with over three minutes before the end of the quarter to give EHS a 33-32 lead. That was the last lead the Hearts were to have.

T-town moved ahead 40-35 at the end of the period. EHS was still within striking distance but then came the devastating fourth quarter.

T-town's Macy Michels opened with a basket before Thompson nailed a three-pointer. Thompson hit three trifectas straight while Jamie Sandschafer nailed a three-point basket. The Shoes went from a five point lead to a 10 point lead in the blink of an eye. T-town was four of four from the field and the lead went to 51-37. Two EHS time outs couldn't halt the flow and the Shoes finished off with the 61-42 victory.

"You've got to give T-town credit," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We had about four possessions and had good looks and didn't make them and they made their shots. There was a two minute span where we left them open and they knocked them down."

T-town was playing without starter Raegan Drees who was in a car wreck earlier in the week.

Thompson finished with 20 points for the Shoes, 11 coming in the second half. She nailed six of 10 from three-point range. J. Bueker had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. S. Bueker was on the verge of double points with nine. The Wooden Shoes improved to 22-5 on the season.

The Hearts were playing without starter Carsyn Fearday who was injured last week.

Effingham was led by Miranda Fox with 14 points while Shelby Myers finished with nine. The Hearts drop to 21-4 on the season.
