MOUNT ZION -- Effingham High School improved its Apollo Conference record to 6-2 on the season with a 52-47 win over Mount Zion in girls basketball action Thursday evening.
The Hearts and the Braves played to a 13-13 opening quarter tie. The Hearts edged ahead 22-20 at halftime. The Hearts then had a 15-9 third quarter to push into a 37-29 lead going into the final period.
The Hearts would need that lead as Mount Zion came back with an 18-15 final quarter only to fall short.
Shelby Myers tallied 14 points while Miranda Fox added 11 and Skyler Schafer had 10 for the Hearts. EHS had 14 turnovers while Mount Zion coughed up the ball 17 times.
"This was a good win for us as Mount Zion has continued to improve all season," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Congrats to Ali Davis who scored her 1,000th point tonight for them. She is a very good player and Skyler came in and did a great job of making her earn her points.
"Shelby did a great job for us with 14 points and nine rebounds, especially in the first half. And Skyler and Bria had their best games to date. Skyler hit two big threes, had 10 points and added five rebounds. Bria had eight points and 11 rebounds. Miranda did a great job tonight of getting into their zone and did a lot of good things. This was a really good effort."
The Hearts are playing without leading scorer Carsyn Fearday who has been out with an injury.
EHS improves to 21-3 on the season and will travel to Teutopolis tonight for a rare Friday evening game. Both teams are ranked in the top 10 in their respective classes in the Associated Press poll.
