Shoes Second at Nashville Boys Tourney, Fourth at Highland Girls Meet

NASHVILLE -- Teutopolis High School fell to Breese Central in what proved to be the championship game of the Nashville Boys Basketball Invitational Saturday. Both teams came into the final game with 3-0 records.
Breese Central edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead and ran off to a 26-15 halftime tally. The Shoes came back in the third period but only pulled within 35-26. Central then had a 15-12 final quarter.
Mitch Hardiek led the Shoes with 22 points while Brant Bueker chipped in with 10. Lane Belleville led in rebounds with six and had one blocked shot.
The big difference came at the free throw line where Breese Central connected on 19 of 23 while T-town was nine of 16.
In the other game Saturday, Nashville beat Breese Mater Dei 51-45. Breese Central finished 4-0, Teutopolis 3-1, Nashville 1-3, Mascoutah 1-3 and Breese Mater Dei 1-3.

At Highland
The Teutopolis girls played for third place at the Highland Tournament and fell to O'Fallon 70-60.
The Shoes held a 15-14 opening quarter lead but trailed 34-28 at halftime. T-town was within nine points going into the final quarter but O'Fallon connected on 15 of 20 free throws and had a 21-20 edge.
Shelby Thompson led the Shoes with 18 points while Jolene Bueker added 17 and Jamie Sandschafer 13. Sadie Bueker and Thompson had three assists each. J. Bueker pulled down seven rebounds.
In Friday competition, T-town fell to Belleville West, 64-54. Belleville West took a 33-20 halftime lead and led 48-33 going into the final period.
Sandschafer tallied 14 while Thompson added 13 and S. Bueker 12. The loss dropped the Shoes into the third place contest.
Highland tallied a 67-39 win over Belleville West for the championship. Fifth place went to Breese Mater Dei over Breese Central 55-41 and Nashville downed Hillsboro 55-51 for the consolation championship.
