Effingham Claims Third at Salem, Saturday Scores

SALEM -- Effingham High School captured third place at the Salem Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.
The Hearts defeated Troy Triad 60-39. The Hearts led by nine early, saw Triad come back to take a two-point lead, then exploded in the second half to lead by as much as 24 points before posting the 21-point win.
Grant Wolfe led Effingham with 23 points, while Landon Wolfe scored 19 points, Brent Beals 12 points and Jacob Donaldson six points.
Effingham went 2-1 in the tournament to improve to 15-3 on the season.
In Saturday action, Salem beat Mount Vernon 42-27 and Mattoon won over Andrews Osborne 60-58. In the seventh-place contest, Mount Vernon beat Andrews Osborne 59-43. The consolation championship went to Matton over Salem 67-66 in two overtimes. Edwardsville won the championship over Centralia 50-46.
Named to the All-Tournament First Team were Grant Wolfe (Effingham), Dawson Berry (Centralia), Javon Williams, Jr. (Centralia), Oliver Stephen (Edwardsville) and Noah Moss (Troy Triad). Second Team members were Jacob Donaldson (Effingham), Landon Wolfe (Effingham), Damond Crosby (Salem), Caleb Strohmeier (Edwardsville) and Jordan Maines (Centralia).
