Effingham High School picked up another victory in its own round robin girls basketball tournament Wednesday evening.

The Hearts handed Vandalia a 44-36 loss. EHS took a 21-7 opening quarter lead as Natalie Carie and Aly Armstrong knocked down a three-pointer each and Carsyn Fearday tallied seven points.

Fearday scored five more points in the second period and didn't play the fourth quarter, finishing with 12 points. Fearday had to exit the game when she hit her head in the final period and it's unknown whether she'll play tonight.

The Vandals weren't down yet as they came back with a 10-7 second period then had a 16-8 third quarter run and took the lead briefly. But the Hearts managed to come back with an 8-3 final period to pull out the victory.

Along with Fearday's 12 points, Shelby Myers chipped in with 10 and Armstrong nine.

In the opening game of the evening, Greenville squeaked past Pana 54-51.

National Trail Conference Tournament

Effingham St. Anthony and South Central claimed wins at the National Trail Conference Tournament Wednesday evening.

The Cougars opened the evening with a 43-34 win over Brownstown/St. Elmo. BSE took a 16-5 opening quarter lead and led 21-13 at halftime. But here came the Cougars. South Central had a 17-7 third quarter to move ahead 30-28 then went out with a 13-2 final period.

About halfway into the third quarter we finally clicked it into gear on both ends."

South Central moves into the consolation championship Saturday at 4 p.m. against either North Clay or Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City. Those two teams play tonight at 6. BSE will meet the loser of the North Clay vs. CHBC game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for seventh place.

"We got out to a great start in the beginning of the game," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Our bench played great defense and took care of the ball in the third and fourth quarters."
