Newton Falls In LIC Tourney, Girls Roundup

MARSHALL -- Newton High School dropped into the third place game of the Little Illini Conference Girls Basketball Tournament with a 51-43 loss to Marshall Tuesday evening.

Marshall took a 13-8 opening quarter lead but Newton pulled back within 22-20 at halftime. The Runnin' Lions had a 29-23 second half.

Williams led Marshall with 21 points while Burdick tallied 17. Newton was led by Grace Hartrich with 18 and Ariel Richards with 11. Hartrich led in rebounding with six and had three assits and two steals. Abby Frohning also had two steals. The Eagles drop to 16-6 on the season.

In the other game, Paris edged Olney 60-56.

Paris and Marshall will meet for the championship at 8 p.m. Thursday. Newton faces Olney at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for third place.

Highland Tournament

Teutopolis had a night off but four games were contested at the 31st Annual Scott Credit Union Highland Tournament Tuesday evening.

In consolation bracket action, Hillsboro beat Carlyle 61-29 and Salem edged Taylorville 46-45. In winner bracket play, Highland handily beat Belleville Althoff 65-33 and O'Fallon won over Breese Mater Dei 81-75.

Teutopolis will be back in action tonight in winner bracket play against Okawville at 7 p.m. In the other winner bracket contest, Belleville West takes on Breese Central at 8:30. In consolation bracket action, Trenton Wesclin faces Troy Triad at 4 p.m. followed by Nokomis agianst Nashville at 5:30.

 

Regular Season

Neoga picked up a National Trail Conference victory over North Clay (Louisville) Tuesday evening.

The Indians led 15-10 after the opening quarter but North Clay came back to take a 25-24 halftime lead. Neoga then had a 21-8 third quarter to put the contest away, 56-45.

Jaycie Roy, a 6-foot senior, led the Indians with 18 points. Blair Banning chipped in with 13.

North Clay was led by juniors Taylor Jones with 16 and Madi Craig with 11.
