MATTOON -- Mattoon High School handed Effingham a 53-47 Apollo Conference girls basketball loss Thursday evening.
The Green Wave edged out to a 14-13 opening quarter lead but the Hearts came back with a 15-11 run to lead 28-25 at halftime.
Mattoon then went on a 16-8 third quarter tear and finished out 12-11 in the final period for the win.
Carsyn Fearday tallied 20 points to lead EHS while Miranda Fox tacked on 11 points.
"This was disappointing," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "You can't go 2-for-21 from the three-point line against an undefeated team and win. We have to have everyone show up to be able to beat a team like Mattoon.
"Avery Jackson and Carsyn Fearday showed why they are the two best players in the area, both were phenomenal tonight. We really hung in there after falling behind by seven in the fourth quarter to get the ball back with a chance to tie and we just couldn't get it done. They did a good job of knocking down their free throws. Congrats to Coach Aydt and her team as they played well."
Mattoon remains unbeaten at 21-0 while the Hearts drop to 17-2.
Effingham won the junior varsity game 39-38.
