Newton, WSS, North Clay, Altamont Pick Up Girls Victories

FLORA -- Newton edged out to a 9-6 opening quarter lead on Flora then had an 11-2 second period. Flora came back with a 28-22 second half but couldn't make up that opening half deficit and fell to the Eagles 42-36 in girls high school basketball action Monday evening.

Abby Frohning, a 5-foot-9 junior, tallied 16 points for the winners while Ariel Richards, a 5-foot-6 senior, scored 11. Frohning and Mariah Earnest pulled down six rebounds each. Frohning and Richards had three steals. Frohning had three assists.

Newton improved to 15-5 on the season and will face Lawrencevillle Saturday in the first round of the Little Illini Conference Tournament at Marshall at 7:45 p.m.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity game 47-19.

At Dieterich

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg picked up a National Trail Conference win over Dieterich 64-59.

Dieterich held a 9-7 opening quarter lead but the Hatchets came back with a 21-15 run to lead 28-24 at halftime. WSS then had a 16-5 third period to pull away.

Megan Schlechte tallied 31 points for the winners while Becca Schlechte scored 14 and Nikki Trussell 11. B. Schlechte led in rebounds with 11 while M. Schlechte had 10.

Dieterich had four players in double figures, Andrea Bierman with 15, Anna Shadle with 14, Gracie Britton with 13 and Jennifer Robards with 10.

North Clay (Louisville) played host to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in National Trail Conference action and came out a 43-32 winner.

The Cardinals stepped out to a 29-14 halftime lead. CHBC came back with an 18-14 second half run but fell short.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Audrey Fleener tallied 13 while Taylor Jones added 11 and Madi Craig 11.

CHBC was led by Taylor Oldham with 10.

Altamont High School pounded Ramsey/Mulberry Grove 65-18 in a non-conference contest Monday evening.

Leah Mayhaus tallied 17 points, 11 in the first quarter. Chipping in with eight each were Shelbi Stone and Taylor Paquette.

The Indians improved to 12-7 with their third straight win. Altamont plays host to Brownstown/St. Elmo Thursday.

Altamont won the junior varsity game 45-7 to improve to 10-4.

Vandalia played host to South Central and easily handled the Cougars 56-14 in a non-conference contest.

The Vandals stepped out to a 26-7 halftime lead and never looked back. Marquardt tallied 17 for the winners while Me. Kern scored 12.

South Central was led by Abby Hahn with six points.
