ALTAMONT -- Altamont High School's Ryan Armstrong tallied 19 points to lead the Indians to a 48-31 non-conference boys basketball victory over Woodlawn Saturday evening. But that wasn't the biggest news of the night.

Armstrong connected on a conventional three-point play midway through the first quarter to tie Elden Burrow for the all-time scoring leader in Altamont history. Burrow, who graduated in 1949, had set the scoring record at 1,449 points. That record has withstood the test of time through almost 68 years.

Armstrong surpassed Ken Brauer, who was at the No. 2 spot, with 24 points Friday night against Dieterich. Brauer, who graduated in 1948, had 1,438 points for his career.

Armstrong, a 5-foot-10 senior, drove to the basket with 90 seconds left in the opening quarter and dropped the ball through the cylinder and drew contact. Fans erupted in cheers but the cheering was short-lived, according to Kurt Becker. An official signaled the foul had taken place prior to the shot.

The Altamont faithful didn't have to wait much longer, however, as Armstrong found himself in possession of the ball at the top of the key with 10 seconds to go in the opening quarter. At 8:15 p.m., he dribbled around a defender, pulled up in the lane and drained a jump-shot with :05 on the clock to make himself Altamont's career scoring leader for varsity boys' basketball. Armstrong was officially recognized by public address announcer Charles Niehaus during the quarter break a short time later.

Armstrong finished with 19 points while Sam Childerson chipped in with 13.
