The Effingham Hearts improved to 12-2 on the basketball season with a convincing 79-47 win over the Taylorville Tornadoes Friday night. The game at Taylorville was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
Effingham wasn't able to put much distance between themselves and the Tornadoies as long Taylorville could make some three-point shots. They put up 34 threes on the night, but made just seven. They made three of those seven in the first quarter to trail only 17-15 at the end of the first period.
The second quarter, though, was of time capsule beauty.
Effingham outscored Taylorville 23-7 in the quarter, making nine of 12 shots, to take a 40-22 halftime lead. Taylorville made their other four threes in the third quarter when they were only outscored 21-19, but the Hearts still edged farther ahead, 61-41.
The fourth quarter, though, saw Effingham outscore the Tornadoes 18-6 to post the 32-point win.
Effingham made 63% of its shots, 30 of 48, including three of eight threes. The Hearts made 16 of 22 foul shots, turned the ball over just 11 times and grabbed 36 rebounds. Taylorville hit on just 33% of its shots, 16 of 48, including the 7 of 34 on threes. They made eight of 13 free throws, committed 12 turnovers and pulled down just 17 rebounds.
Five players scored in double figures for Effingham. Landon Wolfe led the way with 21 points, Grant Wolfe scored 18, Jacob Donaldson 12, Brent Beals 11, and Trevor Kreke 10. Mason Hull scored six points and Ryan Sandifer made a foul shot.
