Effingham High School played host to Salem in freshman/sophomore boys basketball competition Thursday evening and claimed two victories.

The Hearts won the freshman game 50-33.  EHS stepped out to a 23-10 first half and never looked back. Kalber led the way with 10 points while Utz added nine.

In sophomore action, the Hearts had a big comeback bid in the fourth quarter to edge the Wildcats 53-52.

Salem took a 13-8 opening quarter lead and the score was knotted at 25-25 at halftime. The Wildcats then had a 13-7 third quarter to lead 38-32. But the Hearts knocked down five three-pointers in the final period to ouscore Salem 21-14 and pull out the victory.

Jackson tallied 14 while Utz added 11 and Hagler and Kalber scored 10 each.
