Eagles Claim Dieterich Girls Tourney Crown

DIETERICH -- Newton High School captured the championship of the Dieterich Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.
The Eagles defeated North Clay (Louisville), 62-26. Newton ran off to a 21-9 opening quarter lead and led 39-10 at halftime.
Three players hit double figures for the Eagles. Grace Hartrich tallied 13 while Abby Frohning added 12 and Olivia Shipman 10.
North Clay was led by Madi Craig with 12 points.
In the third place contest, Casey-Westfield edged Dieterich 53-51. The Warriors stepped out to a 16-0 first quarter lead and led 30-4 at halftime.
Dieterich mounted a 24-13 third period comeback to trail 43-28 going into the final quarter. The Movin' Maroons then had a 23-10 run only to fall a basket short.
Jennifer Robards led Dieterich with 14 points while Gracie Britton chipped in with 12. Robards knocked down four three-pointers.
Arcola was a winner in the fifth place contest over Brownstown/St. Elmo, 42-38.
The Purple Riders held a 23-18 halftime lead. BSE came back with a 20-19 second half run but couldn't make up that first half deficit.
Dana Shelton led BSE with 13 points while Deana Shelton tallied 11.
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City claimed the seventh place victory over South Central 43-38.
The two squads were tied at 9-9 after the opening quarter. CHBC then took off with a 16-7 second period. South Central came back in the third quarter to pull within 35-31 going into the final period. But CHBC had an 8-7 run.
Jaelyn Robertson and Felicia Johnson had nine points each for the winners. South Central was led by Abby Hahn with 22.
Named to the All-Tournament Team were the Most Valuable Player Grace Hartrich (Newton), Chelsea Cox (Casey-Westfield), Audrey Fleener (North Clay), Taylor Jones (North Clay), Kaitlyn Cohorst (Newton), Anna Shadle (Dieterich), Ryan Fishel (Arcola), Abby Hahn (South Central), Myriah Warner (Casey-Westfield) and Abby Frohning (Newton).

Monticello Holiday Tournament
Neoga High School finished sixth in the Monticello Holiday Tournament Thursday.
Stark County claimed a 64-51 victory over Neoga in the fifth place contest.
Stark County held a 33-25 halftime lead then had an 18-12 third period run.
Neoga was led by Jaycie Roy with 18 points and Blair Banning with 17. Roy hit three trifectas in the game. The Indians are 12-5 on the season.
Monticello won its own tourney championship by downing Colfax Ridgeview 49-21. Tuscola placed third with a 59-41 win over Paxton-Buckley-Loda. GMCS finished seventh by downing Argenta-Oreana 40-20.
