Shoes Win Tourney Title, Hearts Take Third

Teutopolis High School captured the championship of the Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Boys Basketball Classic Thursday evening while Effingham finished out winning the third place contest.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 14-13 opening quarter lead on Chicago Brooks. Mitch Hardiek knocked in a three-pointer and finished with seven points in the quarter while Brant Bueker nailed a trifecta and tallied five points.

The Shoes then fell on hard times as Chicago Brooks went on a 17-9 second quarter tear to lead 30-23 at halftime.

But then it was the Shoes' turn in the third period. Brant Bueker hit another trifecta and put in two free throws while Hardiek scored six and Lane Belleville connected for two baskets and suddenly the Shoes took a 42-38 lead going into the final quarter.

The Shoes then had a slight 22-20 final period edge, connecting on their free throws with 11 of 14. Hardiek continued his tough play with three more baskets and two free throws for eight in the quarter. He finished out leading the Shoes with 25 points.

Also in double figures were Brant Bueker with 15 and Chris Ungrund with 10.

In the third place contest, Effingham edged Lincolnway East 60-56.

Lincolnway East took an 18-12 opening quarter lead as Sam Strader connected for eight points and the squad hit four trifectas.

The Hearts had a 16-11 second period edge and trailed by one at halftime, 29-28. Trevor Kreke hit a three-pointer and two free throws for five points and Brent Beals nailed a trifecta.

Both teams tallied 16 points in the third period and the Hearts were still down 45-44.

Then in the final quarter, the Hearts found the range and outscored Lincolnway East 16-11 to pull out the four-point victory.

Grant Wolfe led the way for the Hearts with 19 points while Landon Wolfe scored 15 and Beals added 13.

In the ninth place game, Altamont suffered a 45-44 loss to Madison.

Altamont held a 14-12 opening quarter lead but Madison got things in gear with a 16-2 second period run to lead 28-16 at halftime.

The Indians came back with a 12-6 third period to pull within 34-28 going into the final period and had a 16-11 run but fell a point short.

Mitchell Stevenson led the Indians with 14 points while Ryan Armstrong added 12.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Grant Wolfe and Jacob Donaldson of Effingham, Brant Bueker, Mitch Hardiek and Chris Ungrund of Teutopolis, Dorian Aluyi and Sam Shafer of Lincolnway East, Ryan Warren and Jamarr Williams of Academ of Law, Quentin Shields and George Harris of Chicago Brooks and Adem Osmani of Oaklawn.

In other games, Charleston beat Mattoon 59-36 for seventh place and Academy of Law downed Oaklawn 75-59 for fifth place.
