Newton, N. Clay Advance to Title Game at Dieterich Girls Tourney

DIETERICH -- Newton and North Clay (Louisville) will meet for the championship of the Dieterich Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament after both teams picked up two victories each in Wednesday action.

In the opening game, North Clay defeated South Central 46-21. The Cardinals had a 30-11 second and third quarter run to pull out the victory.

Taylor Jones led the winners with 12 points. South Central was led by Abby Hahn with 11.

Newton then defeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 62-31. The Eagles had a big scoring first quarter 19-3 and tallied a 22-8 third period.

Newton was led by Grace Hartrich with 10 points while Abby Frohning and Kaitlyn Cohorst had nine each. CHBC was led by Jaelyn Robertson with nine.

North Clay then tallied a 60-50 win over Brownstown/St. Elmo. The two teams were tied at 13-13 after the opening quarter and the Cardinals edged ahead 28-21 at halftime then had a 17-14 final quarter.

Audrey Fleener led the way for North Clay with 21 while Darcy Fender scored 14. BSE was led by Dana Shelton with 17.

Newton tallied a 67-22 win over Arcola. The Eagles led 8-4 after the opening quarter and 29-14 at halftime then had a 38-8 second half run.

Cohorst and Frohning scored 16 each while Hartrich chipped in with 15.

Casey-Westfield defeated Brownstown/St. Elmo 52-31. The Warriors had a 19-6 second period and outscored BSE 14-7 in the third quarter. BSE was led by Dana Shelton with 11.

The final game of the day went to Dieterich over Arcola 42-35. The Movin' Maroons held a one point lead at halftime then had a 22-14 second half.

Jennifer Robards scored 16 and Gracie Britton 11 for the winners.

Today's games feature Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against South Central for seventh place at 1 p.m. followed by Arcola vs. BSE at 2:30 for fifth place. Dieterich will face Casey-Westfield for third at 4 p.m. and Newton meets North Clay at 6 p.m. for the champoinship.
