Bulldogs to Play for Vandalia Title, Area Roundup

VANDALIA -- Effingham St. Anthony High School will be playing for the championship of the Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament after picking up a victory Wednesday.

The Bulldogs handed Flora a 53-38 loss and advances to the championship game scheduled for today at 8 p.m.

St. Anthony stepped out to a 12-6 opening quarter lead and led 29-19 at halftime. St. Anthony continued to roll with a 12-8 third period.

Jack Nuxoll, a 6-foot-2 junior, led the way with 16 points while Drew Gibson chipped in with 12.

In other games Wednesday, Shelbyville beat Ramsey 66-33, Vandalia won over Father McGivney 85-40 and Pana downed Patoka 79-47.

Ramsey will face Father McGivney at 3:30 p.m. for seventh place, Shelbyville takes on Vandalia at 5 for fifth place and Patoka meets Flora at 6:30 p.m. for third place.

Tri-County Holiday Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg split victories Wednesday at the Tri-County Tournament.

The squad opened the day with a 49-39 win over Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond. The Hatchets took a 26-13 halftime lead and then held off ALAH in the second half.

Chase Thies tallied 17 points while Isaac Kramer chipped in with 10.

In the second game, Paris edged the Hatchets 47-44. The Tigers took a 17-8 opening quarter and led 27-15 at halftime.

With a little over two minutes remaining in the third period, Paris had control but the Hatchets started mounting a comeback and pulled within 38-34 going into the final quarter.

Thies nailed a basket and Josh Overbeck put in a bucket and the score was tied with over five minutes left to play. WSS held a one point lead with a little over two minutes left. But turnovers hurt the Hatchets and Paris converted to lead by three. A shot at the buzzer bounced out for the Hatchets giving the Tigers the victory.

Windsor/Stew-Stras will play for fifth place against Tri-County at 4:30 today. Chrisman meets Paris for the championship at 7:30. Hutsonville-Palestine takes on Westville for third place at 6. Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond and Martinsville square off for seventh place at 3.

Monticello Holiday Tournament

Neoga picked up two more losses at the Monticello Holiday Tournament Wednesday.

The Indians fell to Ridgeview in the second game of the morning session, 68-33. Colfax Ridgeview moved out to a 42-15 halftime lead and never looked back.

Neoga was led by Caleb Hill, a 6-foot-0 junior, with 15 points.

In the second contest, Paxton-Buckley-Loda took a 43-21 first half lead and went on for a 73-47 victory.

Hill was the lone Neoga player in double figures with 10.

Neoga will face Sangamon Valley today at 3 p.m. for seventh place. In other games today, Gibson City-Melvin Sibley takes on Ridgeview at 7:30 for the champoinship. Monticello meets Paxton-Buckley-Loda at 6 for third. Tuscola and Argenta-Oreana square off for fifth place at 4:30.
