CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School edged Paris 33-29 in opening round play at the Charleston Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament Tuesday.

It a low-scoring opening quarter, EHS edged ahead 5-2. The two teams got untracked, scoring in the second period as EHS had a 16-12 run to lead 21-14 at halftime. The Tigers came back with a 15-12 second half but couldn't get over the opening half run by the Hearts.

Carsyn Fearday was the lone EHS player in double figures with 12.

"This was really a hard fought battle today," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Our defense was excellent and Paris was just as good. Both teams earned every point they scored. Our guards did an excellent job of limiting their guards. Miranda Fox and Carsyn hit some clutch free throws down the stretch and we handled the end of the game very well. This was a good start to the tournament for us and we need to build on this and carry that momentum into tomorrow."
