Newton Girls Defeat Neoga, Altamont Falls Into Third Place Game

BETHANY -- Altamont High School fell a basket short  in the Okaw Valley Girls Holiday Tournament Tuesday evening.

The score was tied at 49-49 against Mount Zion in a game that determined who went on to the championship. Mount Zion's Emma Ewing put in a layup with one second showing to give the Braves a 51-49 victory.

Alli Davis led the Braves with 16 points but freshmen Ewing and Lainie Wolter scored eight of the Braves' 12 fourth-quarter points.

Altamont was led by three young players in double figures. Leah Mayhaus, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, tallied 14 while JoAnna Schultz, a 6-foot-0 sophomore, added 12 and Shelbi Stone, a 6-foot-0 junior, scored 10.

The Indians fall into the third place game at 6:30 p.m. today against Okaw Valley. Okaw Valley lost to Tolono Unity 31-26.

Mount Zion meets Tolono Unity at 8 for the championship.

In other games Tuesday, Blue Ridge defeated Martinsville 61-23 and LSA won over Maroa-Forsyth 31-26. Martinsville takes on Maroa-Forsyth tonight at 3:30 for seventh place while Blue Ridge meets LSA at 5 for fifth place.

At Newton

Newton took the early lead and never relented in a 63-30 non-conference victory over Neoga Tuesday evening. The game was a makeup from Saturday.

The Eagles led 12-7 after the opening quarter and 35-17 at halftime. Ariel Richards, a 5-foot-6 senior, tallied 18 points to lead the way while Grace Hartrich chipped in with 12 and Mariah Earnest added 10.

Hartrich pulled down 13 rebounds and had three steals. Abby Frohning had four assists and three steals. Newton improves to 9-4 on the season.

Neoga was led by Jaycie Roy and Makenzie Hill with 10 points each.

The Eagles also claimed the junior varsity game 37-21.
