Mustangs Bounce Mount Vernon Zadok Casey Twice

MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham Junior High School claimed two victories as the boys basketball season got underway Monday evening on the road.
The seventh-graders had trouble shooting in the first half, hitting only two of 24 shots and falling behind by as many as 14 points. But the Mustangs battled back outscoring Mount Vernon Zadok Casey 11-8 in the third period and 23-6 in the final quarter for a 44-34 victory.
Ryan Sandifer led the Mustangs with 24 points and five steals. Mason Hull pulled down seven rebounds.
In eighth-grade play, Effingham had three players hit double digits in taking a 62-29 victory.
Grant Wolfe scored 18, Jacob Donaldson 17 and Brent Beals 14 in the win. Wolfe had four steals and six rebounds. Lane Koenig led the team in rebounds with eight.
The Mustangs will be back in action Saturday at Teutopolis.
