South Central Nabs Consy Championship at St. Elmo

ST. ELMO -- South Central High School captured the consolation championship at the 57th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Cougars leaped out to a 22-14 opening quarter lead and held a 33-27 halftime tally. Mulberry Grove and South Central played to a 10-10 third quarter before the Aces had a 15-13 final period but fell to the Cougars 56-52.

Trent Geiler, a 5-foot-9 junior, led South Central with 19 points while Trevor Markley, a 5-foot-10 senior, tallied 17. Also in double figures was Logan Lotz with 10.

In the seventh-place game, Clay City downed Ramsey 56-46.

In a semifinal game, Vandalia was a winner over Cumberland 67-61. The Pirates held a 29-27 halftime lead. The two teams were tied at 48-48 after three quarters. Vandalia then had a 19-13 final period run to pull out a 67-61 victory.

Cumberland had four players hit double figures. Zach Wolke tallied 18 followed by Tyson Magee with 16, Mike Wolke with 12 and Gabe Hatfill with 10.

Cumberland will face Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City for third place at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. St. Elmo/Brownstown will take on  Vandalia at 7:45 for the championship.
