St. Anthony Claims Win Over Newton, Area Scores, Roundup

NEWTON -- Effingham St. Anthony High School handed Newton a 55-43 non-conference boys basketball loss Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 10-7 opening quarter lead. That lead narrowed down to one point at halftime, 24-23. St. Anthony then took control with a 17-8 third quarter. Drew Gibson, who had scored only six points until the third period, went on a tear. Gibson knocked down two three-pointers then connected on a regular basket and five of six free throws for 13 points.

The Bulldogs had everything under control and had a 16-11 final period. Gibson finished with 24 points while Adam Levitt added 10 points.

Newton was led by Tim Weber with 10 points and Joe Stone with nine.

At St. Elmo

The 57th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Tournament got underway Tuesday evening with two games.

In the opener, St. Elmo/Brownstown pounded Clay City 91-19. SEB stepped out to a 16-5 opening quarter and had a 35-3 second period.

Landon Feezel led four players in double figures with 23 points. Lewis Brown tallied 13, Klayton Kroll 10 and Dylan Brooks 10.

Clay City was led by Noah Wilkin with seven points.

In the second contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City took an 18-14 opening quarter lead but Mulberry Grove came back with a 21-14 second quarter to lead 35-32 at halftime. CHBC had a slight 20-19 edge in the third period to pull within 54-52 going into the final period.

The Bobcats then had a 15-10 final period to pull out the 67-64 win.

Aaron Nohren, a senior, led the way for the Bobcats with 29 points. He connected on 10 of 15 field goals and was three of seven from three point range. Also in double figures were Konner Blackerby with 16 and Cody Grove with 11.

Casey-Westfield picked up an 87-48 non-conference victory over Neoga Tuesday evening.

The Warriors stepped out to a 21-13 opening quarter lead and led 53-24 at halftime. Hawker tallied 33 points while Richards added 19, Carver 12 and Gilbert 10.

Neoga was led by Drew Ramert with 14 points and Caleb Hill with 12.
