Hearts Pick Up Apollo Conference Win, Area Girls Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School stepped out to a 10-2 opening quarter lead on Mount Zion and went on for a 50-30 Apollo Conference girls basketball win Monday evening.
Carsyn Fearday connected on four baskets for eight of the Hearts 10 points in the opening quarter. Fearday went on to lead the Hearts with 21 points on seven field goals, including one three-pointer, and six of 10 at the line.
The Hearts led 23-10 at halftime and 32-21 going into the final quarter.
"Mount Zion did a good job rebounding," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We made enough plays to hang on to our lead and put it away at the end. I think we rode Carsyn Fearday's coat tails."
Miranda Fox chipped in with eight points while Shelby Myers added seven.

At Altamont
Altamont had big scoring quarters through the second and third and handed North Clay (Louisville) a 58-36 National Trail Conference loss Monday evening.
The two teams were tied at 8-8 after the opening quarter. The Indians then had a 19-9 second quarter run behind Carly McHugh's two three-pointers and two free throws and Taylor Paquette's five points.
Altamont continued its run with a 21-7 third quarter to lead 48-24 going into the final period. Paquette tacked on seven more points and finished with 12 to lead the Indians. Keidron Duckwitz scored nine while Shelbi Stone and McHugh had eight each in even scoring.
Altamont won the junior varsity contest 47-17.

Newton played host to Red Hill (Bridgeport) and handed the visitors a 60-24 loss Monday evening.
The Eagles held a 35-12 halftime lead. Two players scored in double digits for the winners. Grace Hartrich tallied 17 while Ariel Richards scored 10. Hartrich led in rebounds with 10 and Kaitlyn Cohorst pulled down seven. Abby Frohning led in steals with five. Lauren Probst had three assists.
Newton improves to 8-3 on the season.
The Eagles also claimed the junior varsity game 36-23.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City trailed Ramsey/Mulberry Grove after the opening quarter but came charging back to take a 56-35 victory.
Ramsey/Mulberry Grove held an 11-8 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back with an 18-10 second period run to lead 26-21 at halftime then had a 30-14 second half.
Tabitha Endsley, a sophomore, tallied 20 points for the winners while Kylee Wheeler, a freshman, scored 12. Endsley led in rebounds with 16. Haley Persinger had four assists. Wheeler led in steals with nine.

Woodlawn picked up a non-conference victory over South Central, 44-28.
Woodlawn held a 21-9 halftime lead. The Cougars came back with a 19-17 second half but couldn't overcome that first half deficit.
South Central was led by Abby Hahn with 18 points. She connected on six field goals, two from three-point range, and four of eight at the line.
The Cougars drop to 2-7 on the season.

Oblong held a 10-9 opening quarter lead but WSS came back to lead 19-14 at halftime and 29-19 going into the final quarter.
The Hatchets were led by two players in double figures. Nikki Trussell, a sophomore, tallied 17 points while Megan Schlechte, also a sophomore, scored 17.
Windsor/Stew-Stras improves to 3-8 on the season.
