Mattoon Edges EHS, Area Girls Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School moved ahead of Mattoon 45-44 on a basket by Carsyn Fearday in the final minutes of an Apollo Conference girls basketball contest Thursday evening. But the Green Wave's Sierra Thompson took a pass from Avery Jackson and connected to give them a 46-45 victory.

The Green Wave edged out to an 11-8 opening quarter lead on the Hearts. But EHS came back with a 14-7 second period to lead 22-18 at halftime. The Hearts held onto that lead and stood at 33-29 going into the final quarter.

Mattoon then came back as Jackson connected on three baskets for seven points while Thompson hit seven points after having a nine-point third period.

Fearday tallied 18 points to lead the Hearts while Miranda Fox chipped in with 10. The Hearts suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 7-1.

Mattoon improved to 3-0 in the conference, 8-0 overall.

Effingham claimed a 39-33 junior varsity victory.

At Dieterich

North Clay (Louisville) captured a 47-37 National Trail Conference win over North Clay (Louisville) Thursday evening.

The Cardinals leaped out to a 19-4 opening quarter lead and then had to hold off the Movin' Maroons in the second half.

Dieterich trailed 27-7 at halftime then had a 30-20 second half run.

Taylor Jones led the Cardinals with 26 points while Audrey Fleener chipped in with nine.

Dieterich was led by Anna Shadle with 13 points. Jennifer Robards led in rebounds with seven. Shadle and Andrea Bierman had three assists each. Bierman added two steals.

Newton took a 20-9 opening quarter lead and went on to beat Robinsoni 63-26 Thursday evening.

The Eagles were led by three players in double figures. Grace Hartrich led the way with 21 points and had seven rebounds. Ariel Richards chipped in with 14 points and Kaitlyn Cohorst added 10. Abby Frohning led in rebounds with nine, steals with eight and assists with three. Hartrich chipped in with three assists.

Newton commited only six turnovers and forced Robinson into 30.

The Eagles also claimed the junior varsity game 39-31.

South Central tallied a 42-30 non-conference victory over Ramsey Thursday evening.

The Cougars ran off to a 15-2 opening quarter lead and never looked back in this one.

Three players scored in double digits. Abby Hahn led the way with 12 points while Deidre Hall and Alannah Sigrist scored 11 each.

The Cougars dropped to 2-6 on the season and returns to action Monday hosting Woodlawn.
