Newton, Neoga Pick Up Boys Basketball Wins

NEWTON -- Newton High School's Joe Stone scored only one basket in the opening quarter but came to life in the second and final periods to guide the Eagles to a 68-53 non-conference boys basketball win over Altamont Tuesday evening.

Altamont came out to take an 18-15 opening quarter lead but Stone, a 5-foot-11 senior, broke loose for 12 points and the Eagles went into the half ahead 40-33.

Altamont played Newton even in the third period and trailed 51-44 going into the final quarter. Stone then took over again hitting four baskets for eight points and the Eagles went out with a 68-53 victory.

Stone finished with 23 points.  Also in double figures was Nick Cohorst with 10.

Altamont was led by Ryan Armstrong with 16 points. Mitchell Stevenson chipped in with 10 points.

At Neoga

Negoa High School edged Dieterich 55-53 in a National Trail Conference matchup Tuesday evening.

The Indians held a 15-10 opening quarter lead and led 35-21 at halftime. Dieterich came back in the second half with a 32-20 score but fell short.

Neoga's Drew Ramert, a 5-foot-11 junior, led the way with 30 points. Jackson Clark chipped in with 10 points.

Dieterich was led by Ryan Radloff with 25 points and Tyler Higgs with 14.

Dieterich won the junior varsity game 53-49 and the freshman/sophomore contest 22-17.

At Neoga

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewarsdon-Strasburg stepped out to a 35-29 first half lead but Arcola came back with a 33-17 second half to pull out a 62-52 non-conference win.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Josh Overbeck with 14 points. Nic Hutchinson and Chase Thies tallied nine points each.

The Hatchets drop to 5-1 on the season. Arcola improves to 2-1.

Vandalia came calling and picked up a 74-61 non-conference win over South Central.

The Vandals ran off to a 21-8 opening quarter lead but South Central righted the ship and came back with a 20-15 second period to pull within 36-28 going into the half. But Vandalia came back with a 20-14 third period then held off the Cougars final quarter challenge.

South Central was led by Trevor Markley with 22 points and Logan Lotz with 20.

Casey-Westfield edged out to a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 23-16 at halftime. Cumberland pulled within 35-33 in the third period as Zach Wolke tallied seven points and Tyson Magee chipped in with five.

But Casey-Westfield regained control with a 15-11 final period to pull out the 50-44 victory.

Casey-Westfield was led by Gilbert with 18 and Hawker with 17.

Cumberland was led by Tyson Magee with 16 and Wolke with 13.
