St. Anthony, EJHS, T-town Advance to State

St. Anthony's seventh-grade girls basketball team is headed to state. Effingham St. Anthony, Effingham and Teutopolis all advanced to junior high girls state basketball tournaments with victories Wednesday evening in sectional play.

Class 2A St. Anthony Sectional

St. Anthony edged out to a 3-0 lead on Nokomis then tallied five points in the second quarter for an 8-4 lead. Nokomis came back with an 8-7 third quarter to pull within 15-12 going into the final period. St. Anthony then had a 5-2 run for the 20-14 victory.

Riley Guy tallied 10 points for the Bullpups who improve to 21-2. St. Anthony advances to the Class 2A State Tournament at Paris High School. St. Anthony will meet Lockport Taft (18-0) at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 3. If the Bullpups win, they will play again at 5 p.m. If they lose, they will be eliminated from state play.

Class 7-4A Effingham Sectional

Effingham took on Urbana for the sectional championship and came away a 23-20 winner.

Urbana held a 5-4 opening quarter lead before the Hearts had a 10-6 second period to lead 14-11 at halftime. Urbana came back with a 7-3 third period to move ahead 18-17. The Mustangs then tallied a 6-2 score in the final quarter to pull out the victory.

Duncan scored seven while Schaeffer added six for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs improve to 12-5 on the season and will head to the State Tournament Saturday at Normal Parkside Junior High School. Effingham will face Normal Parkside (24-1) at 2:30 p.m. If the Mustangs win, they will play again at 6:30 p.m. If they lose, they will be eliminated from further state tourney action.

Class 7-3A Tuscola East Prairie Sectional

Teutopolis edged out to an 8-6 lead in the opening quarter and held that two point lead at halftime 16-14. The two teams played to a 6-6 third quarter and the Wooden Shoes then had a 6-4 final quarter run for a 30-24 victory over Paris Mayo.

Macy Probst and Izzy Hardiek tallied nine points each for the Shoes who improve to 22-3.

T-town will now head to Auburn High School Saturday to face Germantown Hills (22-1) at 1 p.m. If the Shoes win, they will play at 6:30 p.m. If they lose, they are eliminated from the state tournament.
