Bulldogs Win Over Warriors, Girls Basketball Roundup

CASEY -- Effingham St. Anthony edged Casey-Westfield 32-27 in girls basketball competition Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs took an 8-5 opening quarter lead but Casey-Westfield came back with a 12-6 second period to lead 17-14 at halftime.

St. Anthony tied the score at 23-23 going into the final quarter. The Bulldogs then held Casey-Westfield to four points and tallied nine for the final score.

Clare McHugh led an even scoring St. Anthony with eight points while Olivia Clausius had seven and Abbie Schmidt and Abby Weis tallied six each. Weis had three assists. Clausius and Schmidt had four steals each. Clausius led in rebounds with eight.

"We just need to get through the grind of next Monday," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "Playing nine games in 15 days will take a toll on our young girls. The learning in this stretch will benefit us for the second half of the season, but it is just staying on the path and being focused through tough times."

At Newton

Charleston came calling and racked up a 35-15 halftime lead on Newton and went on for a 63-37 victory.

Swango tallied 22 for the Trojans while H. Griffen added 17.

Newton was led by Grace Hartrich with 14 points and Abby Frohning with 10. Frohhing had six rebounds while Mariah Earnest and Hartrich had five each.

The Eagles drop to 4-3 and will open conference play Thursday at Paris.

Charleston also claimed the junior varsity game 36-31.

Sandoval came calling and edged host South Central 41-38 Tuesday evening.

The Blackhawks held a 12-6 opening quarter but the Cougars came back to lead 20-17 at halftime and 32-27 going into the final quarter. Sandoval then had a 14-6 run to pull out the victory.

Horrell and C. Garreson led the winners with 11 points each.

South Central was led by Abby Hahn with 18 and Sidney Wilkins with 10. The Cougars drop to 0-4 overall.
