Neoga Claims CHBC Title, Shoes Third at Salem, WSS at Pana

COWDEN -- Neoga High School captured the championship of the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Thanksgiving Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

Neoga finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record followed by Brownstown/St. Elmo 4-1, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 2-3, Sandoval 2-3, Dieterich 1-4 and Ramsey 1-4.

In Saturday action, Brownstown/St. Elmo defeated Sandoval 65-43. BSE leaped out to a 23-17 opening quarter lead and never looked back. Dana Shelton led the way with 19 points while Deana Shelton chipped in with 17 for the winners.

In the second contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher Ctiy won over Dieterich 57-35. The two teams were tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter before CHBC ran off a 19-5 second period.

Three players hit double figures for CHBC. Lauren Wojcik tallied 18 while Felicia Johnson and Tabitha Endsley had 11 each.

Neoga defeated Ramsey 53-19. The Indians held a 30-12 halftime lead. The Indians were led by Blair Banning with 18 while Jaycie Roy chipped in with 12.

Sandoval defeated Dieterich 68-45. The Blackhawks held a 40-23 hafltime lead.

Dieterich was led in scoring by Anna Shadle with 16 points.

In the fifth game of the day, CHBC defeated Ramsey 56-24. Wojcik again led the way with 19 points while Johnson added 14.

In the final game, Neoga downed Brownstown/St. Elmo 63-56. BSE led 19-18 at halftime. Neoga came back with a 45-37 second half.

Roy tallied 19 for the Indians while Banning added 15 and Mary Hill 11. BSE was led by Dana Shelton with 16, Deanna Shelton with 13 and Claire Wilhour with 10.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Jaycie Roy (Neoga, MVP), Claire Wilhour (BSE), Desiree Hammer (Sandoval), Courtney  Garrison (Sandoval), Anna Shadle (Dieterich), Blair Banning (Neoga), Tabitha Endsley (CHBC) and Deana Shelton (BSE).

Salem Thanksgiving Tournament

Teutopolis captured third place at the 16th Annual Wildcat Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes tallied a 65-29 win over host Salem in the third place contest. The Shoes edged out to a 14-11 opening quarter lead and led 33-21 at halftime. T-town then put on a tough defense and outscored the Wildcats 32-8 in the second half.

Three players finished in double figures for the Shoes. Sadie Bueker tallied 20 while Macy Michels added 13 and Raegan Drees 10.

In Friday's game, T-town fell to Highland 56-41. Highland stepped out to a 28-19 halftime lead and then had 28-22 second half.

T-town had only one player in double figures, Drees with 11.

Pana Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg competed in the Pana Tournament and finished in eighth place.

In Friday play, Pana defeated Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 64-49. Pana held a 20-10 opening quarter lead and had a 16-8 third period run.

Nikki Trussell led the Hatchets with 23 points while Megan Schlechte added 13.

That dropped the Hatchets into the seventh-place game against Williamsville. Williamsville claimed the victory 59-22.

The Hatchets were led by Trussell with 13.

Winning the tournament was Mattoon over Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 50-46. Athens took third place with a 50-44 win over Central A&M. Pana claimed fifth place by downing Okaw Valley 57-44.
