In Friday's final action, Effingham pounded Cumberland 52-2 to finish 4-0. The Hearts took a 17-2 opening quarter lead and held the Pirates scoreless the rest of the way.

Carsyn Fearday was the lone EHS player in double figures with 10 points. Sidney Webster and Bria Barr had eight points each.

"It was good to win the Newton Tournament again," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "The past couple of years we have not been able to win the close games. The kids put a good tournament together getting everyone involved and sharing the basketball and playing15-16 good quarters of defense. We need to carry this momentum into the next part of our season, the Apollo Conference first half of the season that will get us to Christmas and we can see where we are at."

Cumberland's basket came from Marti.

Newton beat Altamont 54-44 . The Eagles led 26-18 at halftime. Ariel Richards scored 23 points to lead the Eagles while Olivia Shipman tallied 13 and Abby Frohning 11.

Altamont was led by Shelbi Stone with 14.

In the other contest, Flora beat Cumberland, no score was reported.
