WSS Captures Crown, SEB Second at Mulberry Grove, T-town Third at Classic

CERRO GORDO -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School won the championship of the Cerro Gordo/Bement Boys Turkey Tournament Friday.

The Hatchets finished with a 4-0 record in the round robin tournament. In Friday play, Windsor/Stew-Stras beat Villa Grove-Heritage 64-61. WSS held a 33-32 halftime lead. Villa Grove-Heritage moved ahead 50-47 going into the final quarter. WSS then went on a 17-11 final quarter tear to take the 64-61 victory.

Four players hit double digits for the Hatchets. Christian Kessler led with 17 while Josh Overbeck chipped in with 16, Nic Hutchinson 11 and Isaac Kramer 10.

In the second game of the day for the Hatchets, they stepped out to a 49-18 halftime lead and never looked back in a 72-35 win over Decatur Christian.

Overbeck led the way with 14 points while Hutchinson added 13 and Kessler 10. Eight other players scored in the contest.

Josh Overbeck was named to the All-Tournament Team while Nic Hutchinson was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament

St. Elmo/Brownstown finished second in the Mulberry Grove Boys Turkey Tournament Saturday.

In Saturday action, Ramsey defeated Sandoval 54-42 for seventh place. North Clay (Louisville) was a 65-62 winner over Mulberry Grove for fifth. South Central took third by downing Mount Olive 59-54. Patoka beat St. Elmo/Brownstown 59-56 for the championship.

In the title contest, SEB leaped out to a 25-14 opening quarter lead but Patoka fought back within 32-29 at halftime. The Warriors continued their run with a 16-10 third quarter and both teams scored 14 in the final period.

SEB was led by Lewis Brown with 24 points and Landon Feezel with 20.

In the third place game, South Central defeated Mount Olive 59-54. The Cougars trailed 12-10 after the opening quarter and still trailed 25-24 at halftime. South Central then had a 20-10 final period run to pull out the victory.

Logan Lotz tallied 13 points while Trent Geiler and Ryan Matheny had 11 each and Trevor Markley tallied 10.

In the fifth place game, North Clay (Louisville) edged Mulberry Grove 65-62. Mulberry Grove led 26-25 at halftime. North Clay came back with a 21-13 third period and held off a final quarter rally.

Brandon Repking scored 15 while Bryce Walker and Aleon Rinehart scored 14 each for the Cardinals.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Jered Cain (Patoka, MVP), Garret Belcher (Patoka), Landon Feezel (St. Elmo/Brownstown), Isaac Maxey (St. Elmo/Brownstown), Trevor Markley (South Central), Brady Black (Ramsey), Coleton Downes (Sandoval), Cortlyn Latham (Mulberry Grove), Brandon Repking (North Clay) and Roger Conlee (Mount Olive). St. Elmo/Brownstown won the Cheer Award.

Lawrenceville Capital Classic

Teutopolis finished third at the Lawrenceville/Red Hill Capital Classic Tournament during Saturday play.

The Shoes defeated Lawrenceville 67-40 earlier Saturday before taking on and beating Salem 48-41 for third place.

T-town handily beat Olney in the opener, with 42-15 second and third period runs. The Shoes were led by Brant Bueker with 15 and Mitch Hardiek with 15.

In the third place contest, T-town stepped out to a 17-9 opening quarter lead on Salem and led 27-14 at halftime. Salem came back in the third quarter but not enough.

Brant Bueker scored 25 for the winners.
