MATTOON -- Effingham Junior High School opened play in the Class 7-4A Mattoon Girls Basketball Regional with a 19-13 win over Champaign Jefferson Monday evening.
Jefferson took a 6-5 opening quarter lead but Effingham tied at 7-7 at halftime. The Mustangs then had a 6-2 third quarter run and held on for the victory.
Sowell tallied nine points for the winners who improve to 12-8.
In the second game, Mattoon downed Mount Zion 24-10.
Effingham will be back in action tonight against Mattoon for the regional championship at 4:30 p.m.

At Effingham St. Anthony
Two games were contested Monday evening at the Class 7-2A St. Anthony Regional.
The host squad defeated Altamont 43-18. In the second contest, Brownstown/St. Elmo beat Palestine 22-13.
St. Anthony will now face Brownstown/St. Elmo at 6 p.m. today for the regional title.
At Effingham Sacred Heart
Effingham Sacred Heart beat Martinsville 24-15 in Class 1A Sigel St. Michael Regional action Monday.
Sacred Heart advances to face Dieterich at 6 p.m. today followed by Oakland Lake Crest agianst Sigel St. Michael at 7:15 p.m.
At Arthur
Tuscola East Prairie defeated Arthur in the first game Monday. Arthur had downed Cumberland 28-11 in action Saturday.
In the second game, Paris Mayo won over Shelbyville Moulton 38-18. Moulton had beaten Sulivan 22-18 Saturday.
Tuscola E. Prairie now meets Paris Mayo at 6:30 p.m. today for the championship.
