Effingham High School got revenge for last year's defeat to Flora in the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament Monday evening.
The Hearts placed second last year while Flora won the tournament. This year, EHS defeated the Wolves 55-24 in opening round play. The Hearts held a 25-12 halftime lead and had a 30-12 second half run.
Carsyn Fearday and Miranda Fox tallied 10 points each while Shelby Myers added nine and Skyler Schafer eight in even scoring.
"This was a good start to the tournament," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Our team defense was outstanding tonight. Offensively we had a lot of balance and shared the ball. We got out and ran some and got some easy baskets, but I was really proud of our defensive effort, it was excellent."
In the second contest, Newton pounded Cumberland 61-9. The Eagles led 34-6 at halftime.
Hartrich tallied 16 points while Richards added 12 for the Eagles. Hartrich and Cohorst had five rebounds each and Frohning added eight steals.
