Bulldogs Pick Up Win, Suffer Loss at T'ville Tourney, Area Girls Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony High School opened its run in the 23rd Annual Taylorville Tornadoes People's Bank and Trust Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament with a 41-25 victory over Mount Zion Friday.
The Bulldogs edged out to an 8-4 opening quarter lead and led 17-6 at halftime. Abby Weis tallied 17 points to lead the way while Meg Richards chipped in with eight. Clare McHugh had six assists. Maryann Saba had three steals. Olivia Clausius led in rebounds with seven.
"Got out to a slow start and got down 4-0 but then we turned up the pressure and got to halftime with a 17-6 lead," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman.
In the second game, Hillsboro claimed a 42-33 win over the Bulldogs. St. Anthony held a 16-12 opening quarter lead and led 25-23 at halftime. Hillsboro came back with a 19-8 second half run to pull out the victory.
Clausius led in scoring with 11 points and had 13 rebounds. Abbie Schmidt and Weis tallied nine each.
"We really played well for three quarters and then we went through that scoring drought for about six minutes. That was mostly contributed to fatigue. The game was so physical that it took a toll on our focus."
In other games during the weekend, Hillsboro beat Decatur Eisenhower 62-41, Taylorville beat Jacksonville 57-47, Mount Zion beat Jacksonville 54-29 and Taylorville beat Eisenhower 47-32.
St. Anthony will be back in action in the tournament Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. game against Decatur Eisenhower.

Salem Thanksgiving Tournament
Teutopolis picked up two victories and suffered an overtime loss in the Salem Thanksgiving Tournament during the weekend.
In a Friday contest, Teutopolis downed Belleville Althoff 55-36. The Wooden Shoes held a 25-11 first half lead and never looked back.
Jolene Bueker scored 14 and Raegan Drees 12 in the win. Sandschafer pulled down seven rebounds and had three steals.
In the second contest, T-town downed Carlyle 76-24. The Shoes held a 25-12 halftime lead then had a 30-12 second half run.
J. Bueker tallied 14 and R. Drees 12 while S. Bueker tallied nine. J. Bueker pulled down 10 rebounds while M. Michels had nine. J. Bueker led in steals with four.
In the final game Saturday, Bethalto Civic Memorial edged T-town 63-58 in overtime. Bethalto stepped out to a 10-4 opening quarter lead and led 21-15 at halftime. Bethalto still led 38-31 going into the final quarter. T-town came back to tie the score at 39-39 sending the game into overtime. In the overtime session, Bethalto had a 14-9 run.
Drees tallied 17, J. Bueker 10 and Sandschafer 10 for the Shoes.
In other games during the weekend, Belleville East beat Highland 83-67, Bethalto Civic Memorial beat Belleville Althoff 49-26, Salem beat Belleville beat Salem 62-23.

Windsor/Stewardson competed in the Pana Tournament and fell three times during weekend action.
The Hatchets lost in Friday action to Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 45-17.
In Saturday games, Williamsville beat WSS 47-17 and Mattoon won over Windsor/Stew-Stras 70-26.
In other games, Athens beat Central A&M 59-48, Pana beat Okaw Valley 45-29, Mattoon beat Williamsville 47-16, Mattoon beat Centralia CORL 64-41, Athens beat Pana 54-45, Central A&M beat Okaw Valley 62-34, Centralia CORL beat Williamsville 40-31, Athens beat Okaw Valley 46-34 and Central A&M beat Pana 57-53.
Windsor/Stew-Stras will now face Pana at 3 p.m. Friday in semifinal round play.
