After leading 27-21 at halftime, Effingham St. Anthony's seventh-grade boys basketball team dropped a nail-biter Tuesday to Casey Roosevelt but picked up a one-point win in eighth-grade play.

In the seventh-grade contest, the score was tied at 36-36 going into the final quarter when Roosevelt outscored the Bullpups 12-11 to pull out the 48-47 victory. Brody Niebrugge led the Bullpups with 17 points and nine rebounds. Kyle Stewart contributed 16 points and had two three-pointers. St. Anthony drops to 2-2 on the season.

In the eighth-grade game, Casey Roosevelt held a 10-7 opening quarter lead but St. Anthony came back to lead 16-12 at halftime and 29-25 going into the final quarter. Casey Roosevelt pulled close with a 9-6 run in the final quarter but couldn't overcome the deficit.

St. Anthony had even scoring as Walsh tallied nine, Antrim seven and Laurence six. The Bullpups improve to 2-0.

At Mount Zion

Mount Zion played host to Effingham and sent the Mustangs home with two losses Tuesday.

Mount Zion won the seventh-grade contest 45-12 with a 22-6 first half run. Joe Matteson led the Mustangs with seven points as they dropped to 0-2.

In eighth-grade action, Mount Zion was a 38-26 winner. The Mustangs couldn't hit their free throws as they tallied only five of 18 for 28 percent.

Wolfe tallied 11 points to lead Effingham.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis downed Flora Floyd Henson in both games Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes broke an 8-8 opening quarter tie with an 8-3 second period and went on for a 37-17 win over Floyd Henson in seventh-grade action.

Bushue led the Shoes with 17 points while K. Althoff contributed eight.

In the eighth-grade contest, T-town pushed into a 12-2 opening quarter lead and never looked back in a 43-22 win.

M. Deters tallied 14 and Wermert eight in the victory.
