Mt. Zion's Smith Wins 3A King of the Hill

Mt. Zion's Jonah Smith is the Class 3A boys basketball King of the Hill for 2016.

Smith, who has Effingham ties, tied Mt. Vernon's Braden Fitzjerrells in the first round with 11 threes apiece.

In the shootout, Smith made seven threes, while Fitzjerrells hit five.

Mattoon's Sawyer Scott finished third, making 10 threes in the first round. Charles Kuhle of Mt. Zion finished fourth, so there was a definite area flavor to the competition.

The overall King of the Hill for the four classes of boys' basketball will take place Saturday afternoon following the 3A third place contest.
